The Second Transition of Life
The transition to college for me has been like coming to a new country again, something I don’t look forward to doing again. Coming to college I felt prepared to a certain degree. Back at my old high school, we had a schedule that was similar to a typical college schedule with semester long classes, maximum of four classes. We also had a freshman paper and a senior thesis, those prepared us for the papers that we would inevitably have to write in college. The importance of public speaking was stressed very little, with that being said, most of us have yet to get over the fear of it and so far every class that I have this semester has a presentation aspect within them.
As I transitioned to college, I had to get used to seeing different faces everyday, my high school was the smallest in Richmond with the average number of 50 students per grade. My class started with 120 and ended with exactly half of that, now I’m in a class that is maybe seven times larger. Back in high school I rarely ever did homework because I felt as though it was pointless, I wasn’t interested in the classes and majority of the time the teachers assigned us busy work. My teachers would chase behind me to get me to do my homework but I still proceeded to not do the assigned work. As my french professor said last semester I kind of flew by the seat of my pants through high school. In high school you had a very limited choice of classes to be taking but in college one area of interest has close to or more than 10 different classes. With that being said, it was easy to get motivated to coming to class and actually doing the prescribed work.
However, coming to college I’ve realised that homework is a big part of my grade unlike in high school, if one fails to do homework then one can inevitably fail the class. Mainly due to the fact that your homework (mostly reading) prepares you for the next class, gives you in depth information that the professor may sometimes just glide past and expect you to know it. They don’t baby or chase after you, they could care of the less if you come to class or not because they are still getting paid either way; you’re just wasting your own money and time. Usually when some people move to a different place they get homesick, but not me. I’ve been away from home so many different times, moved twice in one country then three more times in another country that was different in location.
Coming to college was sort of a relief for me, I have no one to limit my time out, no one telling me no I can’t go somewhere, no one sheltering me, finding friends who are sharing almost 90% of the same interests as you, and most importantly I don’t have to keep moving around anymore for few more years.
